Do what you love and it doesn’t seem like work. Sounds familiar right? We have someone in the Day 1 Radio studio today who personifies the quote — founder of the UniverSoul Circus, Cedric Walker.
Nadine’s out today but Maurice and Branden talk to Walker about his experiences — from coming of age in Baltimore to dropping out of Tuskegee to become the stage manager for the Commodores. Then leaving that career to promote the Jackson 5 and other up-and-coming acts in the ’70s.
The guys also get into how Walker founded the Fresh Fest and got cussed out by Sugar Hill Records co-founder Sylvia Robinson, then ending up partnering with Russell Simmons, albeit somewhat reluctantly, on the mega concert.
From ’80s hip hop to the UniverSoul Circus,Walker has succeeded in being the first to accomplish a number of achievements. And who couldn’t stand to use some advice in how to transition and move through all the changes life has to offer?
Of course we couldn’t leave DJ Wally Sparks out! He puts the perfect touch on this ep with a megamix of soul and rap circa Fresh Fest. Press ‘play.’
